What first caught my ear this morning was Rev. Milton Fraser’s prayer that said something like, Love and faith meet us here, incarnate in each person. We had just read John 14:1-14 where Jesus says “whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” And it struck me that we should be the same – we should be Jesus to the people around us. That is, we should be love and faith and acceptance and hope for the people around us to see. But oh boy, it seems a bit impossible to be Jesus.

But I’ve been struck on flowers lately (it is May, afterall!) and hymn 678 made me think about those flowers that are placed in coloured water and their petals change colour in response.

Thou art the life, by which alone we live,
and all our substance and our strength receive;
sustain us by thy faith and by thy power,
and give us strength in every trying hour.

By relying on God and his strength we don’t need to do it by ourselves. We don’t need to let our hearts become troubled. Instead, the natural response of being immersed in God is to show his colours through ourselves.
