Candlemas - February 2nd

The Madonna of the Village by Marc Chagall

Candlemas, February 2nd, is an ancient Christian festival that has its origins in 4th century Jerusalem, where the first processions were held to commemorate Jesus's visit to the temple with his mother, as recounted in the second chapter of Luke's Gospel. Once there, Jesus was presented to the elder Simeon, who called him "a light and revelation to the Gentiles", as the prophets had foretold.  Different cultural traditions have celebrated this occasion in myriad ways, but the consistent imagery is one of light shining through darkness. In this way, the light reminds us that although we will soon journey through Lent, Easter will follow. And, that although we are in the darkness of midwinter, every passing day brings us closer to spring.
